The Bill Of Rights – What Are Them About

The bill of rights is made up of ten amendments. Each amendment is set in place for the protection and security of individual liberties. They impose certain restrictions on the government. James Madison wrote the bill of rights, and Virginia’s legislature approved it on December 15, 1791.

The First Amendment protects our freedom of speech, right to protest, and right to religious beliefs and practices. It prevents the government from favoring a specific religion.

The Second Amendment protects the right to keep and bear arms.

The Third Amendment prevents the government from allowing soldiers to take over private homes.

The Fourth Amendment bars the government from unreasonable search and seizure of an individual or their private property without a warrant that clearly states the reason for an investigation.

The Fifth Amendment states that a grand jury must start severe criminal charges. A person cannot be tried twice for the same offense or have property taken away without compensation. People cannot be imprisoned without fair procedures and trials.

The Sixth Amendment provides the right to a speedy and public trial, trial by an impartial jury in criminal cases, and to be informed of criminal charges. The accused is allowed his or her witnesses and to be represented by a lawyer.

The Seventh Amendment extends the right to a jury trial in federal civil cases.

The Eighth Amendment bars excessive bail and fines and cruel and unusual punishment.

The Ninth Amendment states that listing specific rights in the Constitution does not mean that people do not have other rights that have not been spelled out.

The Tenth Amendment says that the Federal Government only has those powers mentioned are in the Constitution. If it isn’t noted, it belongs to the people.
