Fractions:
A Fraction, simply defined, is a part or a portion of a whole. For example, a slice of pie is a part of the whole pie.
Representation:
Fractions consist of 2 numbers that are separated by a Dash “___” or a Slash “/”.
The number above the dash is called “Numerator.”
The number below the dash is called “Denominator.”
Consider that a pie is divided into 5 parts, then each piece shows 1/5 portion of the whole pie.
Subtraction and Addition
Case 1 If the denominator of fractions is same, simply add/subtract the numerators and write denominator as it is. |
Case 2 If the denominator of the fractions is different, make the denominators same by multiplying and dividing a suitable number. Once denominator becomes same, add or subtract the numerator and write denominator as it is. |
Multiplication
For multiplication, follow the following steps:
- Multiply numerator with numerator
- Multiply denominator with denominator
- Write new values as numerators and denominators.
Division
For division follow following steps:
- Take reciprocal (write numerator as denominator and denominator as numerator) of one of the fractions in division equation, For example: Reciprocal of 1/5 is 5/1
- After taking reciprocal convert division sign into multiplication and follow multiplication rules.
